Aamir Khan Shares New Update on 3 Idiots 2: Rajkumar Hirani Is Preparing the Final Script
Fans waiting to see Rancho and his friends reunite may have a reason to feel hopeful. Aamir Khan has confirmed that director Rajkumar Hirani is working on the screenplay for a sequel to the much-loved Bollywood film 3 Idiots. Aamir expects Hirani to narrate the latest version of the script to him in the coming weeks, although the project has not yet reached production.
The actor shared the update while attending the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), where he received the Screen Icon Award. Before discussing the sequel, Aamir checked with Hirani about how much he could reveal. He then offered a cautious but encouraging update, saying that the director was working on the script and would hopefully share its final version once Aamir returned in the next couple of weeks.
His comments suggest that 3 Idiots 2 remains in development, with important creative decisions still underway. There is no confirmed shooting schedule, cast announcement or release date at this stage. For now, the next significant step appears to be Aamir hearing Hirani’s completed screenplay.
What Aamir Has Said About the Sequel
This is not the first time Aamir has spoken positively about a possible return to the world of 3 Idiots. Earlier this year, he said that Hirani was working on the follow-up and that he had heard a version of the story. At the time, Aamir described the idea as wonderful, while also indicating that the screenplay needed further development.
He has previously suggested that the sequel would retain the original film’s humour while moving its characters forward by around a decade. That time jump could allow the story to explore how Rancho, Farhan and Raju have changed since their college days—and whether their ambitions, friendships and ideas about success have evolved alongside them.
Aamir has also called the concept a beautiful story, crediting Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi with shaping the idea. His enthusiasm is likely to reassure fans, but it does not mean the project is ready to shoot. A screenplay still needs to be finalised, and the filmmakers must settle practical matters such as scheduling, production planning and the availability of key cast members.
Why a Time Jump Could Work for 3 Idiots 2
The original film connected with audiences through more than its comic set pieces. At its heart, 3 Idiots questioned the pressure to follow a conventional path to success, particularly within an education system that often rewards memorisation over curiosity. Its mix of friendship, satire and emotional storytelling helped it become one of the most widely remembered Bollywood films of its era.
A sequel set years later could revisit those themes from a new perspective. The central characters would no longer be students discovering their place in the world; they would be adults facing the consequences of earlier choices. The story might examine how their careers developed, what they learned about happiness and whether the ideals they embraced as young men survived the demands of everyday life.
That approach could also give the film room to reflect on changes in education, technology and work culture since the first instalment. However, these are possibilities rather than confirmed plot details. Aamir’s latest remarks do not reveal the storyline, and the filmmakers have not publicly outlined the sequel’s characters or setting beyond earlier comments about a later chapter in their lives.
Remembering the Original Film
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots starred Aamir Khan as Phunsukh Wangdu, the inventive student better known to his friends as Rancho. The ensemble cast included R. Madhavan as Farhan, Sharman Joshi as Raju, Kareena Kapoor Khan as Pia and Boman Irani as the strict college director Viru “Virus” Sahastrabuddhe.
Directed by Hirani and written by Hirani and Joshi, the film combined campus comedy with a critique of academic pressure and rigid definitions of achievement. Its enduring popularity has kept interest in a sequel alive, but that popularity also raises expectations. Any follow-up will need to capture the spirit of the original while giving its characters a story that feels necessary, rather than relying on nostalgia alone.
Aamir’s expected script narration is therefore an important creative checkpoint. Hearing the finished screenplay will help him assess whether the new story offers a compelling reason to return as Rancho. Until the script is approved and production details are announced, however, fans should treat the sequel as a project in development—not a confirmed upcoming release.
No Release Date or Shooting Schedule Confirmed
Despite renewed excitement around the Bollywood sequel, 3 Idiots 2 does not currently have an official release date or confirmed start date for filming. Reports have previously speculated that production could begin around April 2027, after Aamir completes other commitments. Neither Aamir nor the filmmakers have officially confirmed that timeline.
The immediate focus remains on Hirani’s screenplay and Aamir’s upcoming narration. If the actor responds positively and the script is finalised, further announcements may follow about the cast, production schedule and release plans. Until then, the latest update offers a promising sign of progress—but not a guarantee of when audiences will see the beloved characters together again.
