Daler Mehndi controversy: FWICE writes to PM Narendra Modi, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami after minister’s alcohol allegation

FWICE Backs Daler Mehndi After Uttarakhand Minister Interrupts His Performance

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has come out in support of singer Daler Mehndi following a controversial interruption during his performance at a public event in Uttarakhand. In letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the industry body urged authorities to treat artists with fairness, sensitivity and professionalism.

The incident took place on Sunday at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri. Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted Mehndi on stage and alleged that the singer was under the influence of alcohol. The moment has since prompted discussion across the entertainment industry about how concerns involving performers should be handled in public settings.

FWICE Calls for Sensitivity and Restraint

In its correspondence, FWICE said it was aware of Mehndi’s health-related challenges and his recovery from surgery. The federation also stated that, to its knowledge, the singer does not consume alcohol. It argued that any concern about a performer’s health or conduct should be assessed carefully rather than addressed through a public reprimand.

“While we recognise the importance of ensuring the smooth conduct of public events, such concerns should be addressed with sensitivity and discretion rather than through public reprimand,” the federation wrote.

FWICE further cautioned against drawing conclusions about an artist’s condition without properly considering the circumstances. It said that if organisers or officials have concerns about a performer’s well-being, those concerns should be handled compassionately and through appropriate channels.

The federation’s position highlights a broader issue in live entertainment: public events often involve tight schedules, large audiences and multiple stakeholders, but performers may also have health needs that are not visible to those watching. FWICE’s appeal is that event management and artist welfare should not be treated as competing priorities. Both, it said, require professionalism and careful communication.

Federation Highlights Mehndi’s Contribution to Indian Music

FWICE described Mehndi as a celebrated figure in Indian music whose songs and performances have connected with audiences across generations. The singer is widely recognised for helping popularise energetic Punjabi pop and bhangra sounds with listeners across India and beyond. His long career has made him a familiar name not only in music but also in the wider Bollywood and entertainment landscape.

“An incident involving the public humiliation of such a senior artist is deeply distressing to the entire entertainment fraternity,” the letter stated.

The federation also emphasised that artists deserve fair and professional treatment regardless of their fame or the circumstances surrounding a performance. Its appeal was not limited to Mehndi: FWICE said public representatives and event organisers have a responsibility to ensure that concerns about an artist’s health or performance are handled appropriately.

That distinction matters in an industry where performers frequently work under demanding conditions, travelling between venues and appearing before large crowds. A sudden interruption can quickly become a viral moment, but the context behind an artist’s behaviour or physical condition may not be apparent to an audience. FWICE’s statement calls for restraint before public assumptions are made.

How the New Tehri Incident Became an Industry Issue

The controversy began when Uniyal stopped Mehndi’s performance at the fair and alleged that the singer was intoxicated. The episode drew attention because it unfolded on stage, in front of an audience, rather than being addressed privately after the performance. FWICE’s response has since shifted the conversation towards the responsibilities of officials and organisers when dealing with performers at public events.

The federation urged authorities to adopt a more considerate approach and reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and professional rights of people working in entertainment. Its letters seek fair treatment for artists while acknowledging that public events must be conducted responsibly.

FWICE’s intervention also reflects the influence of industry associations in raising concerns when a performer’s treatment becomes a matter of public debate. By writing directly to senior government leaders, the federation has asked for the incident to be viewed not only as a dispute between an official and a singer, but also as a question of professional conduct and artist welfare.

Anupam Kher Also Responds

The episode has attracted reactions from other entertainment figures as well. Actor Anupam Kher backed Mehndi after the on-stage reprimand, questioning whether it was necessary to humiliate the singer publicly. His response added to the growing discussion among Bollywood and music-industry personalities about dignity and respect for performers.

While the incident has prompted strong reactions, FWICE’s central message is focused on the way such situations should be managed. If there are genuine concerns about a performer’s condition, the federation says, they should be addressed discreetly, based on the available facts and with concern for the person involved.

For now, the controversy has renewed attention on the relationship between event organisers, public officials and artists. FWICE’s appeal is for future disagreements or welfare concerns to be handled through clear communication rather than public confrontation. The federation says artists should be treated with compassion and professionalism—principles it considers essential to a respectful and safe entertainment industry.
