Akshay Kumar’s Sci-Fi Thriller Samuk Wraps UK Shoot, Heads to Mumbai for Final Schedule
Akshay Kumar’s upcoming science-fiction action thriller Samuk has completed its extensive filming schedule in the United Kingdom and is preparing to move production to Mumbai. The final leg is expected to last around 20 days, bringing the film closer to the end of principal photography and marking a major milestone for one of Bollywood’s most ambitious genre projects in development.
Directed by Kanishk Varma and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under the Sunshine Pictures banner, Samuk is being developed as a large-scale theatrical experience. The film combines science fiction, action and survival elements, with the makers aiming to create a visually striking story for audiences across India.
UK schedule completes most of the film
The production team began shooting in the UK in late August, using the international schedule to film a substantial portion of the project. Reports indicate that nearly 80 per cent of the movie was completed during the overseas shoot. The upcoming Mumbai schedule will cover the remaining scenes, with the crew expected to focus on the final portions of the story before moving into post-production.
The film has reportedly been in development for more than two years, a timeline that reflects the planning involved in mounting a science-fiction feature with extensive action and creature effects. While the production has kept details of its locations and sequences largely private, the UK shoot provided an opportunity to capture material on a scale suited to the film’s cinematic ambitions.
For a project built around an unfamiliar world and a mysterious central threat, the shift from international locations to Mumbai may also signal a change in the type of scenes being filmed. The final schedule could include character-focused moments, additional action passages or other material required to connect the film’s larger set pieces. The makers have not disclosed specific details, keeping the film’s story firmly under wraps.
Akshay Kumar leads an ensemble cast
Akshay Kumar headlines Samuk, joined by Rukmini Maitra, Vineet Kumar Singh, Rajat Kapoor, Swanand Kirkire, Banita Sandhu and Sushant Singh. The cast brings together performers with varied screen backgrounds, from mainstream Hindi cinema to independent films and regional projects. That mix could give the film a distinctive ensemble dynamic as it moves between action, suspense and survival drama.
Although the characters and plot have not been revealed, the casting suggests that Samuk is designed to be more than a one-person action vehicle. The supporting cast may play an important role in shaping the film’s emotional stakes and bringing different perspectives to its science-fiction setting. Keeping those details secret also allows the filmmakers to build anticipation without giving away key story turns ahead of the release.
For Kumar, the film adds another high-concept title to a career that has frequently moved between action, comedy, drama and socially themed stories. A science-fiction thriller presents a different kind of challenge, requiring the lead performance to feel grounded even when the story involves extraordinary events. That balance is often central to making speculative fiction accessible to a broad theatrical audience.
Creature effects bring international experience
One of the project’s most notable behind-the-scenes additions is Academy Award-nominated creature-effects designer Alec Gillis. Known for his work on the Alien and Predator franchises, Gillis is creating the central alien creature for Samuk. His involvement brings experience from some of Hollywood’s best-known science-fiction and creature features to the Indian production.
The filmmakers are reportedly taking a grounded approach to the visual design, combining practical creature effects with large-scale action. That blend can help a fantastical threat feel tangible on screen, giving actors and audiences a physical presence to respond to rather than relying entirely on digital imagery. It also reflects a broader trend in modern genre filmmaking, where practical effects and computer-generated work are often used together to create more convincing worlds.
Creature design can be especially important in a film that has not yet revealed its premise. The alien may be central to the story, but the way it is introduced, photographed and integrated into the action could shape the movie’s tone as much as the performances do. With the character design being handled by a specialist associated with major international franchises, expectations are likely to be high among science-fiction fans.
A reunion after 13 years
Samuk also reunites Akshay Kumar and producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah after 13 years. Their renewed collaboration gives the film an added point of interest for Bollywood audiences familiar with their earlier work together. Shah is producing the project through Sunshine Pictures, with Aashin A. Shah serving as co-producer.
The partnership arrives at a time when Indian filmmakers are increasingly exploring genres that have traditionally been less common in mainstream Hindi cinema. Science fiction, creature features and survival thrillers can demand substantial investment in design, effects and production planning, but they also offer filmmakers the chance to create stories with international appeal while retaining a distinctly Indian cast and creative identity.
With most of the shoot reportedly complete, the next major phase will involve editing, sound design, visual effects and the integration of the creature work. These stages are particularly important for a film that combines large action sequences with speculative elements. A carefully paced edit and cohesive effects work can help maintain suspense while making the fictional world feel believable.
Pan-India release planned for 2027
The makers are positioning Samuk as a major genre release for Indian cinema, with a pan-India theatrical launch planned for 2027. A release across multiple languages could help the film reach audiences beyond the traditional Hindi-speaking market, particularly if its science-fiction premise and action-driven storytelling translate across regions.
For now, the production’s progress offers a glimpse into the scale of the project, but its central mystery remains undisclosed. As the team prepares to complete the Mumbai schedule, interest will likely grow around the film’s first-look material, teaser and eventual announcement of a release date. Until then, the combination of Akshay Kumar, an experienced ensemble, international creature-effects talent and a 2027 theatrical target makes Samuk one to watch among upcoming Bollywood sci-fi films.
